A varied selection of general activity for October 2024, mainly focused in central and southern Scotland.
First up, AS & PF had a great autumn day on 10/10/24 when, driven on by AS’s quest to bag all the Donalds, they traversed some hills roughly 3km to the NW of Tweedsmuir, NT 09569 24483. They included, from NE to SW, Coomb Hill, Gathersnow Hill, Hillshaw Head and Coomb Dod, Pic taken from near Coomb Hill, NT 06956 26456, looking NW viewing Tinto Hill, NS 95305 34452, centre pic, Culter Fell, NT 05303 29144, centre right and Coulter Reservoir centre left.
On 12/10/24, MMcE & RP visited the Atlantic Wall, a military relic on Sheriff Muir used for D-Day preparations, see https://canmore.org.uk/search/image?SIMPLE_KEYWORD=Sheriff%20Muir. Pic looks SE from the road to a feature on the hill that is one of the bunkers.
Close-up it looks rather used.
Looking NW with RP striding along the east side of the linear wall section.
Atop one of the bunkers at the NW end of the military relics.
Looking west towards Ben Ledi, NN 56283 09791. A fine day out.
MMcE & RP were out again a week later, on 19/10/24, cycling from Glenbranter, NS 11188 97561, towards Loch Eck. The previous weather had caused many land slippages with trees blocking the tracks. Unusually this time the temporary signage was pretty accurate warning folk of the obstacles and hazards. Pic shows Ben Ruadh, NS 15577 88428, centre left looking SSE, from the west side of Loch Eck.
Another landslide.
…but we’re all happy.
Beautiful Loch Eck and well worth the visit.
Lastly for October, AS, PF & BR headed to The Grey Mare’s Tail car park for accessing White Coomb, and associated hills, but due to road closure they decided on another objective and drove back round to Tweedsmuir to do Broad Law, NT 14641 23572, Cramalt Craig, NT 16850 24745 and Hunt Law, NT 14992 26503. Very windy but good visibility despite the forecast mist. …Team Teeth – another grand day out!
