Other notable walks in June were BR & MM on their Hebridean way from Vatersay to Tarbert and AS & PF heading to Drumelzier in search of some of the few remaining Donalds that AS must do!
First up, 03/06: BR & MM embark on their Hebridean trek by first taking the ferry from Oban to Castlebay, Barra, where they stayed overnight prior to the start of their walk the following day.
04/06: Vatersay and Barra. The following day they reached the start of the walk in Vatersay, NL 63323 95426, by taking a bus from Barra. They both enjoyed the sun before the wind, rain and hail set in. This first day was going to be the one involving the most ascent during the trip, at an accumulation of 719m.
Beautiful beaches on Vatersay.
Having left Vatersay, they climbed up the side of Barra’s most western hill, Beinn Tangabhal, NL 63563 98918, enjoying the view to the SE over the eastern end of Vatersay.
05/06: Aird Mhor ferry terminal to Daliburgh, and their camp at 07:00hr…awaiting the next ferry to Eriskay.
By chance BR & MM met another couple of FVMC friends who were on holiday in a rented cottage…tea and cake for them – before they had to set up camp in the dunes near the beach.
06/06: Daliburgh to Howmore and some beautiful stretches of beach.
07/06: Howmore to Liniclate and a pic of Howmore hostel, NF75759 36433, https://gatliff.org.uk/ where they stayed the previous evening.
08/06: after a stormy night at Liniclate campsite, some more beach walking the Liniclate to Carinish section.
…having walked inland they climbed the one and only trig point on their walk - the mighty Ruabhal, NF 82523 53366, at 124m!
On route to Carinish via one of the several breakwaters connecting the islands. The only downside of the trip was where they needed to walk on Macadamed roads to connect the off-road sections.
09/06: Carinish to Lochmaddy. Having spent a really nice evening in a Moorcroft Holidays hostel, NF 83703 59669, https://www.moorcroftholidays.com/, they set off across some more low-lying terrain, some of which must experience stormy events!
10/06: Lochmaddy to Leverburgh. Having camped just outside Lochmaddy, NF 90305 70225, they had another very mixed day of sun, wind, rain and hail. Pic shows the view looking south from the high ground south of Berneray NF 89915 76328.
11/06: Leverburgh to Horgabost. Having camped right outside the restaurant in Leverburgh (!) they restarted their march northwards into the hills, encountering some peat cuttings on the way.
12/06: Horgabost to Drinishader. The previous night they camped at Horgabost campsite, NG 04821 96794, and the following day set off to in an easterly direction to a hostel at Drinishader. With the weather noticeably improving the scenery could be magnificent, the pic was taken up the hill from Horgabost looking north to the mountains in North Harris.
BR walking SE along the track to Bealach Eorabhat, NG 10091 94716. This day was particularly noticeable in that it was the only time they experienced midges during the entire trip…it was for less than a couple of minutes – and then the wind returned, thankfully!
Their last stop before reaching Tarbert was at NO 5 Hostel, Drinishader, https://www.5drinishader.co.uk, NG 17123 94817.
13/06: Drinishader to Tarbet. This was a short section that could have been done the previous day, but they had a day to spare, meaning that Tarbet could reached with time to burn...like investigating some industrial history along the way – and the Tarbert Distillery.
Covering the last 3km to Tarbert.
Having completed a trek of 189km/118miles, carrying typically 15kg, they arrived in Tarbert, staying the evening at the Backpackers Stop, https://www.backpackers-stop.co.uk/, before catching the 06:35hr ferry to Uig on Skye the following day. A great trip with weather for all seasons and surprisingly not many folk around.
Lastly for June, on 03/06 AS& PF caught some good weather down at Drumelzier, from where they climbed Den Knowes, Den Knowes Head, The Scrape, Pykestone Hill, Middle Hill, Taberon Law, Craig Head and back via valley path to Drumelzier. Pic shows view WNW down to Hopecarton.
Looking NNW towards Drumelzier Law from Middle Hill. Altogether a trip of around 20km.
