General December 2022 Activity: Dollar Law, Railways, Earl’s Seat, Ben Deuchary & eastern Pentlands

The month of December 2022 experienced some intense wintry weather, forcing the abandonment of our December Weekend Meet at Crianlarich. However other times in the month gave some opportunities for getting out and about.

First up was on 07/12/22 where AS & GG visited Manor Glen south of Peebles and climbed Dollar Law, NT 17805 27827. Frost turned to snow at 700 metres but they made the trig pillar in 105 minutes with just one brief halt for coffee. Their route continued easily over Fifescar Knowe, Dun Law and Norman Law before descending steeply but easily to the head of the Glen for a pleasant ramble back to the car. A guid day oot!

On Thursday 08/12/22 BR & IH went walking ESE of St Fillans, NN 71598 23398, using the forest access to climb Mor Bheinn, NN 71624 21155 then Beinn Dearg and its higher outlier, NN 68519 18989. This is IH at the start of the walk, confident that he is unlikely to be knocked down by a train.

The view from the top of Mor Beinn towards Beinn Dearg and its higher outlier with Stuc a Chroin and Ben Vorlich distant left.

At the higher outlier of Beinn Dearg, NN 68519 18989, with Stuc a Chroin and Ben Vorlich capped in snow, 6km to the west.

…as usual BR must get pictured with some railway artefacts!

On 13/12/12 AS & GG had a fine day out at Dunkeld, on Ben Deuchary, NO 03749 48528, via the Loch Ordie circular and Mill Dam, NO 03111 46165. This is part of the approach.

The view from Ben Deuchary. A long winters day at 6:30hrs and cold too with -9degC at the start and -6degC at the end!

Finally for the year, on 21/12/22 AS & GG visited three tops in the Pentlands, Caerketton Hill, NT 23548 66177, Allermuir Hill, NT 22715 66153, and Capelaw Hill, NT 21620 65963. Despite fighting the wind, which was verging on the “blow you over” section of the Beaufort Scale, they nevertheless remained upright, enjoying the good visibility and dry weather…a bonus at this time of the year! This is from Allermuir Hill looking NE.
