Sunday 28th of May brought the second Day Walk that month, a full round of Gleann a' Chlachain from Kirkton Farm. For ARob, BR, IMcM, CS & Harry the Dog, there was dry ground, a light breeze, plenty of sunshine & no midges keeping them in the best of spirits (though there is always one to find a bog.
A group pic at the top of Beinn Challuim, NN 38686 32226. There were plenty other folks on this hill enjoying the grand weather.
As planned IMcM returned from the summit to make an appointment in Callendar whilst the remaining party took on the major challenge of the day; the steep and bouldery 500m descent into Bealach Ghlas-Leathaid, NN 37834 33027, immediately followed by an equally steep ascent of 360m onto the SE Ridge of Cam Chreag, NN 37553 34668. Pic shows the descent route of Beinn Challuim’s little visited NW ridge, as seen looking SE during our ascent of Cam Chreag.
Beinn Chaorach, NN 35877 32830, the lowest of the three...and a great deal easier to ascend - as seen when descending from Cam Chreag.
From near the top of Beinn Chaorach looking NE to Cam Chreag (left) and Beinn Challuim (right).
At the top of Beinn Chaorach, last hill of the day…and the last of the tea and coffee. They descended the easy, grassy slopes to rejoin paths at the abandoned settlement at Caol Gleann, NN 35564 30562, then back to the cars via a short stroll on the Auchtertyre stretch of the West Highland Way; 18.47 km & 1335m of ascent.
