28/01/24 Day Walk: Nine Mile Burn to Flotterstone Bridge, via West Kip…sort of!

Towards the end of January we scheduled another Day Walk, this time in the Pentland Hills, going from Nine Mile Burn, NT 17741 57742, north onto the ridge then NE to the end at Turnhouse Hill, finishing by dropping down east to Flotterstone, NT 23431 63113…that was the plan – but the Mighty FVMC got blown off the ridge at West Kip and had to adopt a ‘Low Level Route’ instead! https://consumerplatform.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/route/20514734/240128--day-walk-nine-mile-burn-to-flotterstone?lat=55.836768&lon=-3.299957&zoom=12.3905&style=Leisure&type=2d

The expedition party, having been swept like dried out leaves off the top of West Kip, head down NE towards Loganlea Reservoir in the distance.

With all the hillwalking ended for the day it was a straightforward march to The Flotterstone Inn, dodging cyclists, for a bowl of soup and some Babychams.

…shock, horror, catastrophe, the inn was temporarily closed! Some members are forced to sit outside whilst others retrieve the cars from Nine Mile Burn. Mountaineers always must have a plan B for such emergencies, so we reconvened at the café above Craigdon Mountain Sports Edinburgh, https://www.cms-edinburgh.com/.

The interesting thing about this pic is the grey barrier in front of the door suggesting that they can get problems with snow building up there – such confidence in Scottish Winter Conditions is admirable. Overall, we had a day that covered 11km and 318m of ascent.
