21-23/06/24 Weekend Meet: Glen Brittle Memorial Hut

The June club meet was on the island of Skye at the Glen Brittle Memorial Hut, https://gbmh.co.uk/. Hills climbed included Ben Aslak, NG 75080 19110, Ben Tianavaig, NG 51175 41029, Marsco, NG 50749 25182 and Sgurr Mhic Coinnich, NG 45036 21089, Sgurr na Banachdaich, NG 44034 22442 and Bruach na Frithe, NG 46083 25215.

First up, Saturday 22/06, ARob, AS & MMcE headed out of Glen Brittle to do some low-level hill walks as the weather forecast was not all that great, some rain and plenty wind. They headed first for Ben Aslak near Glenelg, heading up from the radio mast, NG 75360 20705. Pic shows the view just after leaving the radio mast looking east over the water to Glenelg.

Other hillwalkers that day.

Summit selfie.

On the descent they decided to take in Beinn Bheag to the north.

At the top of Beinn Bheag and some decent views to the east.

Afterwards they headed north to do Ben Tianavaig. Pic shows view looking south just after their start from Tianavaig bay.

Wild Thyme.

Heading up above the cliffs.

Along the ridge with the edge dropping straight into the Sound of Raasay.

Pinnacles near the summit.

A weathered round summit trig point. A good day out with three interesting hills done.

On Sunday SP & TF had good weather made even better with a climb of Bruach na Frithe, NG 46082 25203. Pic shows cool dude SP in the foreground at the start of the fairy pools footpath with Bruach na Frithe and Coire na Creiche upper left with Sgurr na Bairnich upper centre.

On the grassy NW ridge of Bruach na Frithe, around NG454 260, before it became stony.

A bit higher up the ridge, Bruach na Frithe is hidden by the ridge whilst on the left Fionn Choire is cloud free and visible.

Looking back NW down the ridge, with the path to Sligachan just visible in the background. The dense forest area on the left is near where they started from.

A nice level section of the ridge, narrow and fun to walk along and although steepens there is a stony by-pass path to the right.

Looking up the ridge.

After reaching the top they could look NE with Fionn Choire to the left in the foreground, Glamaig centre pic with Loch Sligachan to it’s left and the Isle of Raasay behind. Having descended into Fionn Choire they walked along the lower NW side of their approach route but just before joining the path, that linked the fairy pools car park with Sligachan they took the nearby path that led generally south into Coire na Creiche, for nearly 2km. They then later headed WNW joining with the fairy pools path.

SP & TF at the western end of the fairy pools path on the way back to their bikes which had been parked in the forest below the fairy pools car park.

Also on Sunday 23/06, GH, AH, MMcE and friend headed out for Marsco, NG 50733 25162. They started from the A87 at Loch Ainort and the touristy waterfall. Pic shows the Loch Ainort waterfall, Eas a' Bhradain (Salmon Falls) with Marsco behind.

They partially climbed the shoulder of Druim Eadar Da Choire (a route to Garbh bheinn), below the boulders/scree, high above the Coire of dreams, to reach the bealach SE of Marsco Pic shows the view of the Red Cuillin to the north, NG 51392 29984.

Lots of wildflowers to spot on the climb. Milkwort among all the Tormentil.

Looking SE towards Sgurr nan each on the Clach Glas traverse, NG 53342 22446.

View back to Loch Ainort, NG 55422 28229, from ridge.

Frog hiding in Blaeberry.

Another view of The Red Cuillin from higher up Marsco.

Looking west they see Sgurr nan Gillean, NG 47147 25325, free of cloud.

Having returned by the same route they headed back to Glen Brittle and the foreshore of Loch Brittle, NG 41033 20597, where there was a welcome swim.

Some fine evening weather gave them a view of Coire Laggan to the east, NG 43778 20560, from the shore.

Overall, a very good weekend for the FVMC members.
