17/03/24 Day Walk: Hart Fell from Auchencat Burn

It was on a bleak, wet and windy day that FVMC stalwarts, IH, AS, BR, CS & Harry the Dog went to do Hart Fell, NT 11358 13579, about 9km NNE of Moffat. Their chosen start was just south of Ericstane at NT 07516 10316, see; https://consumerplatform.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/route/21446773/240317--hart-fell--fvmc-dw?lat=55.393936&lon=-3.443933&zoom=13.3293&style=Leisure&type=2d.

Their intent was to follow the Auchencat Burn from the road, heading NE and when it was joined by Spa Well Burn they would head uphill to Hart Fell, visiting Hartfell Spa (Chalybeate) along the way.

It makes for a hefty note that despite a collective 150 x years of navigational experience, high quality maps, compasses, map and GPS apps that the stalwarts missed their turn off and continued for nearly a kilometre before it finally dawned on them! However turning fault into fun (!) they decided to continue NE up to the tributary Airdmagh Gill, have some lunch and then climb the somewhat steep side of Arthurs Seat before reaching Hart Fell. Fun indeed.

…on top of Arthur’s Seat, less than a kilometre from Hart Fell - at least Harry knows the way!

And bleak it was, Hart Fell, sadly devoid of any views to the east featuring Saddle Craigs. However the wet and cool stalwarts were happy in the decision to get down and back home for a warm soak in their own baths; 11.9km, 674m of ascent, total trip of 4:48hr.
